Dermal Fillers Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

You will always have a consultation before your first treatment. Think through what you want to achieve and the questions you may have. Your healthcare practitioner will inform you how Dermal fillers can be used in a safe way to suit your own individual aspirations. You will also be asked about your medical history. When you leave your consultation, you should feel well informed about Dermal fillers and you should know what results to expect.

First of all, you should always contact a qualified healthcare practitioner to be assured that your dermal filler treatment will be performed correctly. You could always search in national registers of licensed aesthetic treatment specialists. Your treatment should be performed in a medical environment that affords you privacy and is spotlessly clean. You may want to request to see your chosen practitioner’s training certificate and insurance certificate to ensure that he or she is appropriately trained and insured for the treatment.

Only a medically qualified practitioner should perform Dermal Filler treatments. Depending on your country’s legislation, this may include plastic surgeons, cosmetic clinicians, dermatologists, cosmetic dentists, or aesthetic nurses.

You should receive comprehensive information and a detailed explanation regarding your Dermal filler treatment.

•    You should be informed of the possibilities and limitations of treatments with hyaluronic acid.
•    You should receive information about possible side effects and precautions for treatment.
•    You should be informed of the cost of the treatment and possible follow-up treatments.
•    Your questions should be answered to your full satisfaction.

There are several important precautions to discuss with your healthcare practitioner to ensure satisfactory results and avoid any complications. Discuss the following with your healthcare practitioner:
•    If you are taking immunosuppressive medications
•    If you are taking aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or any other medication that affects bleeding
•    If you have any questions about precautions related to the treatment

First, the healthcare practitioner disinfects the area to be treated. A small amount of the appropriate Restylane filler is then injected into the skin through a fine needle or blunt micro-cannula to fill wrinkles, add volume, shape your face or fill your lips. After the injection, your practitioner may gently massage the treated area to even out the result.

A treatment with Dermal Fillers does not take long. Depending on the area and indication, it takes approximately 15-45 minutes. A touch-up treatment is sometimes performed approximately two weeks after the initial treatment to optimize the results.

Some people may experience mild discomfort. Most Dermal fillers contain an integrated local anesthetic, lidocaine, to provide you with a more comfortable treatment experience. You and your healthcare practitioner may decide whether additional pain relief is needed.

Patients with a known allergy to hyaluronic acid based products should not undergo treatment, nor should patients with bleeding disorders, or active skin disease such as inflammation, infection or tumors in or near the area to be treated. Discuss contraindications, warnings and precautions with your healthcare practitioner before Dermal filler treatments in order to get the product best suited for you.

Most Dermal Filler products are not acceptable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, discuss with your healthcare practitioner for advice.

After the treatment you will receive post-treatment guidelines. It is normal to experience some post-treatment discomfort, such as redness, swelling, pain, itching, bruising or tenderness at the treatment site. These side effects generally disappear within one week after injection.

Other potential side effects can occur with dermal fillers based on hyaluronic acid. You should discuss the potential treatment risks with your healthcare practitioner. Following treatment, there is sometimes a need for a touch-up treatment to achieve an optimal result.

In order to maintain the aesthetic result, additional treatments, or top-up treatments (see below), are recommended. Results may vary depending on the treatment area and the dermal Filler brand used.

Since most Dermal filler treatments are long-lasting but not permanent, it is recommended to have top-up treatment for maintaining the results achieved in the initial treatment. Top-up treatments will most likely require lower volumes of hyaluronic acid, depending on the injection area and the time gaps between the treatments.

Avoid applying make-up to the skin immediately after treatment.
•    Light cover up may be used to conceal any remaining redness after approximately 24 hours.
•    A yellow-toned concealer may be used to hide signs of bruising.
•    In order to cover up any redness, a concealer with a slight green/yellow tone is recommended.

The most common side effects include treatment site reactions such as swelling, bruising, redness, pain and tenderness. These side effects generally disappear within one week after injection. Other potential side effects can occur with dermal filler injections. You should discuss the potential treatment risks with your healthcare practitioner.
